1.  Stella is a second grade student who exhibits a great interest in listening to stories during shared reading, yet she does not have any motivation to read otherwise. She often states that she doesn’t like to read.


Using your knowledge of reading assessment, write a response in which you describe the IRI(s) that would be most informative for Stella’s teacher.

2.  Mrs. Russo, a first grade teacher, has noticed that in her guided reading group (which is below grade level) one of her students is having a difficult time with high frequency word identification.
Write a response in which you describe an assessment Mrs. Russo should give to this student.

3.  Mrs. Murchey has a second grade class, which ranges widely in its reading levels.
Using your knowledge of reading assessments, write a response in which you describe an assessment that would be the most informational to assess the reading levels of the whole class.

4.  Mr. McGuire is teaching a third grade class and he has a span of reading levels which he accommodates through flexible guided reading groups.
Write a response in which you describe an assessment schedule that would regularly monitor progress of his students.

5.  Mrs. Lin has found that the reading anthology text is not meeting the needs of each of her students. She has decided to use support texts for those students who still need more reading support.
Using your knowledge of assessments, write a response in which you describe assessment(s) that would best indicate the instructional, independent or frustration reading level for each of her students.

6.  The students in Miss Lee’s classroom are very active readers. She has a lot of concern for not having enough time to do a full miscue analysis or reading running record with each student on a daily basis.
Write a response in which you describe one other type of test Miss Lee should include in her IRIs.

7.  Mr. Sanchez has just completed his assessment of his students’ reading levels. He is now ready to implement the plans to meet the needs of his students in his instructional planning.
Write a response in which you discuss some of the classroom management and/or literacy strategies that could be planned for his class to meet his students reading levels.

8.  Miss Eide is asked by her principal to make sure that she knows which students are not on grade level in reading.
Write a response in which you describe which IRIs would aid Miss Eide in gauging her students’ grade level in the subject area of reading.

9.  After a teacher is aware of the district/state standards for a particular grade level, it is her responsibility to apply interventions for those students who are not working at grade level expectations.
Using your knowledge of intervention strategies, write a response in which you describe what steps a teacher should take to help an at-risk student.

10.  In Mr. Castillo’s third grade class, all students have been individually assessed, by a reading running record.  Half of the students have been found to be at the emergent level of reading.
Write a response in which you describe which literacy strategies would be the most effective to implement for students at this level.

11.  Rodney is a English Learner in third grade.  He is having difficulty in recalling the new vocabulary that he learns for each new story. He doesn’t seem to have much recall for identifying the words once they are used again in another text reading.
Write a response in which you describe two literacy strategies that would be most helpful for Rodney. 


12.  Wendy is a first grade student who is having a lot of trouble with understanding what she has read. She has no trouble with reading the words of a text, but she has minimal recall of comprehension elements.
Using your understanding of reading instruction, describe two instructional strategies that would best meet Wendy’s needs.

13.  A kindergarten teacher wants to assess his students’ knowledge of concepts about print.
Using your knowledge of reading assessments, describe some of the assessment tools he can utilize to give him this information.

14.  A student in Mrs. Currie’s second grade class is able to regularly read the first part of a word correctly, but the student is having difficulty with middle and ending sounds.
Write a response in which you describe two literacy strategies that would meet this student’s needs.

15.  One portion of a reading running record coded the following text sample after a student reading:
TEXT: A bear’s home, called a den, is where it spends most of the winter.

STUDENT: A beautiful honey, calls a cave where it snows must off the wide.
Analyze the student response, describing a strength or weakness. Describe two strategies that would be effective to meet this student’s needs and explain why.
